Calagraño

Calagraño

Calagraño is a rare grape variety predominantly found in the vineyards of La Rioja, a famous wine region in Spain. It is an unusual breed and is noted for its role in contributing to the white wine blend of the La Rioja region. Regrettably, due to its low yield, the cultivation of Calagraño has dwindled in recent years and it is now considered a minority variety.

Known for its incredibly small berries, Calagraño's low yield is primarily due to the grape's compact bunches, which inhibit sunlight from reaching deep into the foliage. This results in minimal sugar accumulation and consequently, a lower alcohol content in the resultant wine. Despite this, the grape has a remarkable potential to ripen well and if grown under the appropriate conditions, can achieve a reasonably high alcohol level.

The wine produced from the Calagraño grape is typically pale yellow in colour with a moderate to full body. It has a distinctive aroma characterised by delicate floral and fruit notes, such as pears and apples. On the palate, the wine displays a good balance of acidity, pleasingly soft texture, and a dash of mineral nuances.

Calagraño maintains its acidity exceedingly well into the ripening phase, making the wine ideal for ageing. When matured, it develops richer and more complex flavours, and characteristics of honey and toasted nuts become more pronounced.

Though not widely recognised or cultivated, the Calagraño grape and the wine it produces remain a part of Spain's viticulture heritage. Despite its scarcity, Calagraño wines are worth seeking out for their unique flavour profile and their contribution to the landscape of Spanish wines.
