Carmenère

Carmenère

The Carmenère grape is a magnificent variety, native to the Bordeaux region of France but nowadays primarily cultivated in Chile. This wine grape, known for its deeply coloured and richly aromatic red wines, was once prevalent in Bordeaux. However, it dwindled to near extinction in Europe due to its susceptibility to phylloxera, a grapevine pest, in the late 19th century.

This grape variety was rediscovered in Chile in the late 20th century. For a long time, it was mistaken for Merlot due to its similar appearance. But in 1994, this confusion was cleared and the Carmenère grape was hailed as Chile's star variety. Chilean vineyards now lead global production and are championing the resurrection of this exceptional grape.

Characterised by its dark, ruby-red colour, Carmenère wines are rich in berry flavours and possess an earthy and spicy nature. When tasted, you will find hints of green pepper, dark chocolate and an alluring hint of smokiness. It's a medium-bodied wine, often less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon, but richer and more lush than Merlot.

The Carmenère grape thrives in a long growing season, in moderately rainy climates. It's typically harvested later than other varieties, around May, allowing for its unique burst of spicy and savoury flavours to fully form. Because of its distinct flavour and rarity, Carmenère wines are highly sought-after by wine connoisseurs.

There is an increasing interest in Carmenère wines globally that could herald a remarkable comeback for this regal grape. Its resurgence is a testament to its resilience and adaptability. Despite its tumultuous history, the Carmenère grape continues its journey, defiantly offering an unmatchable taste and contributing to exotic, tantalising wines savoured around the world.
