Colombard

The Colombard grape is a prominent variety of white wine grapes that originates from France. These grapes were traditionally grown in the Charentes and Gascony regions for producing Cognac and Armagnac respectively. However, in recent years, they've gained recognition in other places, particularly South Africa and California, where they're used to create fresh, aromatic table wines.

This grape is known for its hardiness, exhibiting high resistance to disease and versatile adaptability to different weather conditions. This quality makes it a popular choice among vine cultivators worldwide. The clusters of Colombard grapes are typically large and cylindrical carrying round, greenish-gold berries.

Wines made from Colombard capture a balance of acidity and sugar, which transitions into a racy freshness on the palate. They are renowned for their distinct, crisp flavours, often embodying fruity notes of lemon, apple, pear and pineapple, coupled with floral undertones. In well-made renditions, you may also trace nuances of tropical fruits, often finished with a flinty minerality or a hint of spices. To retain the fruit's aromatic qualities, wines are usually vinified in stainless steel vats.

While Colombard wines are typically consumed young to relish their vigorous fruitiness, some winemakers opt for oak ageing or partial fermentation to add complexity. In Australia, the grape is often blended with Chardonnay to create a more rounded, harmonious taste profile.

Regardless of whether they're enjoyed independently or as part of a blend, Colombard wines promise an invigorating and pleasing drinking experience. They shine brightly when paired with seafood or subtly flavoured, creamy dishes.

In spite of their origin in France, Colombard grapes are now less abundant in their homeland. Their decline in popularity is simply because of the grape's image as a “workhorse variety.” Fortunately, regions like California and South Africa have recognised its potential, offering a significant boost to its global prestige.
