Dornfelder

Dornfelder

The Dornfelder grape is a robust, dark-skinned variety that hails from Germany, more specifically, Weinsberg in the Württemberg wine region. It is a relatively new cultivation, stemming from a cross-breeding programme in 1955, and was officially recognised as a distinct grape variety in 1979.

Noteworthy for its intensity and depth of colour, Dornfelder grapes have a natural affinity with oak and can produce wines of stark resonance and substance. It owes its deep pigment to its unique parentage, obtained from a cross between Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe grapes. This lineage represents the outcome of numerous successive hybridizations, an interesting journey of wine genetics that starts with Pinot Noir and the lesser-known grape varieties like Trollinger and Schwarzriesling.

Dornfelder grape is widely regarded for producing wines which exhibit luscious cherry, blackberry and mulberry flavours with soft sprigs of sweet spice and occasional vanilla undertones. This light-bodied red wine's main appeal may well be its jovial fruitiness, which can be enjoyed in both off-dry and sweet iterations.

In terms of cultivation, Dornfelder grapes are evidently versatile, successfully growing in various regions and climates across the world. However, despite its adaptability, Dornfelder remains an obscure variety on the global wine scene, shadowed by the more commercially prominent German varieties, such as Riesling.

Dornfelder is often enjoyed as a stand-alone varietal but can often be seen blended with other Germanic red wines. It is popularly consumed in its home country where it delivers a heartwarming counterpoint to the traditional, white-dominated German wine field.

As a newcomer to the wine grape family, Dornfelder continues its steady journey towards international recognition. Backed by its distinctive characteristics and budding scope for wine variations, the Dornfelder grape presents a promising world of novel indulgence for wine lovers worldwide.
