Karmrahyut

The Karmrahyut grape is a vibrant indigenous variety of grape, originating from the fertile lands of Armenia. Its name ‘Karmrahyut’ interestingly translates to ‘red juice’, portraying a vivid and slightly romantic image of its juice when pressed. This grape is globally renowned for its distinguishing deep red colour and its intense aroma profile, loaded with the lavishness of wild red fruits, spices and profound earthy notes.

The Karmrahyut grape, often regarded as the 'jewel of Armenian wines', is known for its dominant presence in the fruit-forward red wines that are garnering increased international attention in terms of their spectacular boldness and diversity. The grape grows effortlessly within the sun-bathed, rocky and mineral-rich soil of Armenia - conditions that award the grape with its unique flavour and character.

These berries are usually hand-picked in the late autumn, a harvesting ritual that allows each grape to bask in sun for a longer duration, thereby facilitating a sufficient maturation process. The winemaking process is meticulous, often involving the traditional 'Karasi' method of wild fermentation, helping to retain and enhance the flavours of each grape. The wine is then matured in Armenian oak barrels, a step that adds complexity and charm to the final product. The resultant wine, much like the grape itself, is plump, tannin-rich, robust, with a high alcohol content, appreciated for its clear notes of ripe red berries, dried fruits, and subtle hints of earthy undertones.

While wholly capable of producing stellar standalone wines, the grape displays its versatility in blends, where it partners exquisitely with other Armenian grape varieties like Areni and Haghtanak. As a whole, the Karmrahyut grape encapsulates the age-old Armenian wine culture, promising an exquisite wine-tasting journey, filled with the potent blend of taste, aroma, history, and tradition.
