Nero di Troia is a robust and full-bodied grape variety indigenous to Italy. Primarily, it's found in the regions of Apulia, understood (or rather, misunderstood) for a long time as one of Italy's workhorse regions, in particular, areas like Castel del Monte, and the provinces of Foggia and Bari. Part of the Apulia’s trio of important grapes, alongside Negroamaro and Primitivo, Nero di Troia is venerated for its expressive dark fruit flavours and tannic bite.
Known by an array of alternative names like Uva di Troia, it's often speculated that this grape traces its lineage back to the ancient city of Troy. Nevertheless, this intriguing anecdote is cloaked in uncertainty, resulting in a riveting mystique around this grape. In some stories, the Greek hero Diomedes supposedly brought this grape to Italy after the Trojan War.
Until the late 20th century, Nero di Troia was predominantly used in blends. However, recently, its finest characteristics have been harnessed as a varietal wine. Nero di Troia wines are generally characterised by an intense ruby hue with a bouquet of red fruit, common aromas being cherries and berries, alongside subtle floral undertones such as roses and violets, and a beautiful balance of spices.
It's known for its firm, ripe tannins and vibrant acidity, bound together by a medium to full-bodied structure. These wines flaunt exceptional ageing potential, mellowing and evolving over time to yield a more nuanced, elegant character.
The Nero di Troia grape displays impressive versatility in terms of the spectrum of wines it can yield, ranging from soft and fruity wines designed for early consumption to complex and structured wines that luxuriate in years of cellaring. Certainly, on the global wine stage, Nero di Troia’s star is ascending.
