Périgord

Périgord

The Périgord grape, often known as the Malbec grape, originates from the historic natural region of Périgord in the south-west of France. Esteemed by wine connoisseurs around the globe, the Périgord grape is the stalwart variety behind the deep, full-bodied red wines that are emblematic of the Bordeaux and Cahors regions.

Although the grape is susceptible to disease and rot in the damp maritime climate of Bordeaux, it thrives in the sun-soaked terroir of Périgord. Here, the grape develops its signature intense colour, high tannin content, and complex flavour profile packed with notes of blackberry, cherry, plum, and cocoa, with hints of black pepper.

Notably, the Périgord grape is one of the six permitted varieties in Bordeaux blends. However, due to its tendency to frost damage, it has been increasingly replaced by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon over the years. Despite this, the Périgord grape still takes centre stage in the less-known Cahors region, where wines must be composed of at least 70% of this variety.

Périgord grapes are characteristically small with thick skins, lending the wine it produces a robust structure and considerable ageing potential. The wine is traditionally aged in oak barrels, contributing to its robust character, and it pairs exceptionally well with hearty meats and cheeses, making it a quintessential accompaniment to the savoury gastronomic delights of its home region.

Despite enduring difficulties with frost and disease in some regions of France, the Périgord grape has found a rejuvenated existence in the vineyards of Argentina, where it is grown extensively. It has hence claimed a new global status, yet it never ceases to be quintessentially Périgord, embodying the richness and complexity that have long been associated with the historic region.
