The Schioppettino grape, also known as Ribolla Nera, is an exceptional wine grape variety native to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the northeastern part of Italy. The varietal conjures bewitching fragrances and elegant flavours, making it one of the region's most cherished wine grapes.
Schioppettino was almost extinct by the mid-20th century, largely a result of the vine disease phylloxera, which wiped out vineyards throughout Europe. However, due to the tireless efforts of local winemakers, notably the Rapuzzi family, the varietal was resurrected in the 1970s. Since then, it has been recognised officially and is now protected by the Italian law under the designation Schioppettino di Prepotto.
The prime growing areas for Schioppettino are the hilly vineyards of Prepotto, along the Slovenian border. The combination of the region's remarkable microclimate, and the marl and sandstone soils, offer ideal conditions for this grape variety to showcase its best characteristics. With traditional winemaking methods, the grape yields wines that are medium-bodied and intensely aromatic.
Schioppettino wines are ruby to garnet in colour, with a lively nose boasting herbaceous and floral undertones as well as blackcurrant and spicy aromas. On the palate, Schioppettino is characterized by high levels of acidity and fine, balanced tannins. Its taste further evolves into an intense yet refined fruit profile, underpinned by persistent spicy notes on the finish.
The wine pairs well with a variety of foods such as cured meats, game, poultry and aged cheeses. Its balanced character makes it quite versatile.
Today, despite its somewhat tumultuous history, Schioppettino stands as a testament to the rich viticultural heritage of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. This small, black-skinned variety with its compelling characteristics is indeed emblematic of the resilience and determination of the Italian winemaking community to preserve their indigenous grape varieties and the diversity of their wines.
