Sylvaner

Sylvaner

The Sylvaner grape is an age-old, white wine grape variety predominantly grown in regions of France and Germany, with smaller quantities cultivated across Eastern Europe and other parts of the world. The grape has a century-old history, its origin tracing back to Roman times. Interestingly, it is a cross between the robust Traminer and the much lesser-known Österreichisch Weiss, showcasing the perfect combination of vitality and versatility.

The Sylvaner grape reflects the unique characteristics of the terroir it is grown in, producing wines that range from crisp and light to full-bodied and aromatic. In the vineyards of France's Alsace region, Sylvaner makes superbly refreshing wines, highlights being pastoral fragrances with a high-acid, dry finish. Over in Germany, particularly in the Franconian region, the grape develops a distinctly more substantial profile, with tantalisingly fruity nuances and an admirably full body.

Sylvaner grapes are beautifully distinct, cloaked in a deep yellowish-green skin. They are usually harvested in late-April, reaching their optimal flavour balance between acidity and sugar content. The wines obtained from the Sylvaner grape are marked by their ethereal clarity, straw-yellow colour, and greenish reflections.

Traditionally, Sylvaner wines are best consumed young. They are incredibly compatible with a variety of dishes due its delightful balance of fresh acidity and subtle fruitiness. It's especially at home with Alsace cuisine, pairing well with smoked fish, roasted vegetables and creamy sauces.

Although the Sylvaner grape's popularity has seen some decline, passionate winemakers have been working to revive its standing. Notable producers have emerged who are dedicated to celebrating the grape's potential and reintroducing it to modern palates. These efforts have led to a newfound respect for this paragon of vinous history and have secured the Sylvaner grape a deserving place in the world of wine.
