Tinta de Toro

Tinta de Toro

Tinta de Toro is a unique variant of the Tempranillo grape which is hailed as Spain's flagship variety. This particular grape is indigenous to the Toro region, located in the northwest of the country. The Toro region is notable for its harsh, arid terrain, characterised by infertile soil and extreme climate conditions, which has a significant influence on the grapes' character.

Tinta de Toro grapes have adapted to thrive in the demanding Toro wine region, due to their tougher skin which helps to withstand the intense summer heat. This robust skin contributes to the full-bodied, intense colour, robust tannin structure and elevated alcohol levels that are typical of wines produced from the Tinta de Toro grape.

The profound ruby-red wines derived from this grape frequently exhibit an expansive range of fascinating aromas and flavours. There is often a prevalence of ripe, dark fruits such as blackcurrant and plum, accompanied by notes of spice, leather, tobacco and vanilla. These are the result of oak barrel ageing that most Tinta de Toro wines undergo.

Winemakers are drawn to Tinta de Toro vineyards because the grapes possess a greater concentration of sugar and produce wines with a higher alcohol content. This is because the vines, in a fight for survival, yield fewer but more robust berries. This deep intensity and concentration set Tinta de Toro wines apart as some of Spain’s finest and most treasured.

This grape fused with winemaking techniques reflects the region’s deep-rooted wine growing history and tradition, along with its unique terroir; these elements are captured within each bottle. Despite the regional specificities, the Tinta de Toro grape maintains the intrinsic characteristics of the classic Tempranillo while asserting its own refined and distinctive twist.
