Verdelho

Verdelho

Verdelho is a white wine grape variety that has its origins in Portugal but has gained significant popularity across other countries. Notably used in the production of madeira — a fortified wine hailing from the Madeira Islands of Portugal — this grape variety is now recognised globally for its contribution to many dry and semi-dry whites.

Verdelho grapes are lauded for their rich character, well-structured flavours, lively acidity and potential for maturation. When cultivated, these vines bear large, golden-yellow fruit that is slightly oval in shape. This grape varietal exhibits an innate resilience towards challenging viticultural conditions, demonstrating a proclivity to grow in diverse climates and soils whilst maintaining its distinct flavour profile. This has permitted its successful cultivation in a range of wine regions, from Australia and New Zealand to the United States and beyond.

In the glass, Verdelho wine is light yellow in hue, with a tropical and citrusy aroma. It frequently expresses vibrant notes of citrus fruits, stone fruits, tropical fruits, and honey alongside a mineral-driven undertone. To the palate, it presents zesty, rich flavours, supported by its high acidity and minerality, which renders it an exceptionally balanced wine. As a young wine, the fruit's fresh flavours shine through, while ageing can bring out more complex salty and nutty nuances, typical of the transformative nature of the Verdelho grape.

As for food pairings, Verdelho’s bright acidity and fruity character make it a splendid companion for a wide range of dishes, particularly seafood, spicy curries and Asian cuisines. Altogether, Verdelho, with its distinctive personality and adaptability, is a grape variety that has undoubtedly garnered acclaim for producing wines that are as versatile as they are enjoyable.
