Vespaiola

Vespaiola

Vespaiola is an indigenous white grape variety primarily cultivated in the northeastern regions of Italy, predominately in the Breganze DOC in the Veneto region. The variety derives its name from the Italian word 'vespa' which means 'wasp' - a reference to the insect's fondness for the grape's high levels of sugar.

Vespaiola vines thrive on the hilly slopes of the area, benefitting from the dry, chalky soil and temperate climate to produce grapes that are ripe and rich in flavour. This grape variety is renowned for its opulent structure and high sugar content, which results in wines of considerable freshness and acidity.

Wines produced from Vespaiola are typically medium-bodied and possess a distinctive complexity. They exhibit intense aromas of white flowers, apple, and honey, making the taste far from dull. Depending upon the winemaker's choice, these wines can either be dry or sweet, with the latter being achieved through a process of late-harvesting that concentrates sugars within the grape.

The most famous wine style made from Vespaiola grapes is known as Torcolato. Considered a prized sweet wine, it undergoes a unique process of rope twisting (‘torcolare’ in Italian), where harvested bunches of grapes are tied and left to dry until they reach the optimal sugar concentration. The result is an exceptional dessert wine with an exquisite balance of sweetness and acidity, featuring intriguing notes of overripe fruits, honey, spices, and almond.

Although often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts like Prosecco or Pinot Grigio, Vespaiola provides a unique expression of the Veneto terroir through its distinctive wines. Whether you favour a dry white or a luscious sweet wine, the Vespaiola grape is certainly worth encountering for its versatility and captivating taste profile.
