Zweigelt

Zweigelt

Zweigelt is a beautifully bold red grape variety primarily originating from Austria, and is in fact the nation’s most planted red grape. Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, an Austrian biologist, crafted this variety in 1922, earning its name from its creator. The grape is a result of the crossing of two Austrian native grapes – Blaufränkisch and Saint Laurent, inheriting desirable traits from both these varieties, making it suitable for a range of wine styles, from light and fruity to bold and spicy.

Zweigelt's influential nature allows it to be grown in multiple Austrian regions, including Burgenland and Niederösterreich, and has even seen some success abroad in Canadian and American vineyards. The grape is quite hardy and resistant to numerous vine diseases, making it a firmly reliable asset in any vineyard.

The finest Zweigelt wines offer a balance of lovely fruit flavours, including ripe cherries and raspberries and an underlay of spice. This grape can produce wines with exceptionally deep, attractive purple hues, giving a visually appealing aspect to the drinking experience. Depending on the winemaking process, the wines may also have a hint of floral and vegetal notes, adding to the refreshing presentation of flavours.

Zweigelt is often served young due to its fresh and vibrant flavours. However, more robust versions, often aged in oak barrels, can benefit from few years of cellaring, intensifying the fruit’s complexity and adding a welcome touch of vanilla flavours. This grape is incredibly versatile, creating a range of wine styles from easy-drinking, chillable reds to more complex, structured versions.

Pairing it with food is quite simple, as it goes well with a variety of dishes such as pasta, pizza, smoked meats, and Austrian-related dishes like Wiener schnitzel.

To summarise, the Zweigelt grape offers a combination of delightful fruity notes, visual appeal and a hardy, disease-resistant nature, making it a diverse and impressive addition to the world of red wine varieties.
