Product Notes

Chateau Montelena Estate Zinfandel wine is a delightfully complex Californian wine. It boasts an impressive ruby red colour, exuding rich aromas of juicy red berries, pepper and spice, underlined by subtle hints of earthy tones and oak. On the palate, this Zinfandel reveals flavours of ripe black fruit, balanced by harmonious, velvety tannins and a unique freshness - a testament to its Napa Valley origin. Its robust body, complexity and long finish make it the perfect accompaniment for robust meat dishes, ensuring a truly indulgent dining experience. A must-try for wine enthusiasts seeking an enchanting and memorable taste journey.

Tasting Notes

NOSE - Brimming with fresh fruit, the aromas are dominated by ripe raspberry and cranberry, leaning southern Italian in style at first. However, after a few minutes, the Zinfandel component becomes more prominent and robust as blackberry jam, hoisin, and savory herbs appear, lending some allure as well as familiarity. It’s the nexus of these disparate, yet harmonious red and dark fruit characteristics that’s emblematic of Montelena wines and our Calistoga vineyard. PALATE - The elegance of 2018 comes through immediately on the palate. Laser-focused acidity and strawberry slowly merge with sweet baking spices, dried cherry and earth. The tannins are soft enough to balance the acidity without overwhelming the steady stream of candied fruit. Medium-bodied, the weight of the wine adds depth without the need for extended aging FINISH - As the fruit subsides, the brambly nature of Zinfandel comes to the forefront; first as mint and then as black pepper and tea. The tannins here are more chalky, almost chewy, and complement the subtle notes of smoke and pipe tobacco exceedingly well.

About the Winery

Chateau Montelena

Nestled amidst the verdant vineyards of Napa Valley, California sits an unparalleled gem of viticulture—The Chateau Montelena. This revered winery stands steeped in history, offering not only a feast for the palate, but also a delightful journey through time.

Inaugurated in 1882. Chateau Montelena remarkably marries Old World charm with New World innovation. Its picturesque stone chateau, inspired by English Gothic architecture and surrounded by a tranquil Chinese garden, captures the essence of its founders' heritage, ensuring every visit is a delightful escape into an era of elegance.

The winery is globally celebrated for its exquisite range of transformative wines. Their distinguishing clay-based soil has been the secret ingredient to the breathtaking liquid treasures they've been crafting for nearly a hundred and fifty years. The mastery behind the Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, is noteworthy — a testament to the winery's myriad accolades and esteemed reputation.

Chateau Montelena stunned the world in 1976 at the Paris Wine Tasting, also known as "The Judgment of Paris," with a jaw-dropping victory that catapulted California into worldwide wine fame. It’s Chardonnay trounced eminent French wines, revolutionising the wine scene and placing Napa Valley on the global vino map.

The essence of Chateau Montelena doesn’t merely lie in its luminous wine legacy. It is ingrained in its tireless pursuit for sustainable farming practices, and its commitment to balanced, authentic wine-making that respects the land and its unique terroir.

Chateau Montelena is truly an enigma rooted in rich, fertile soil— a winery like none other. It stands as a testament to the timeless allure of Napa Valley, a beacon of American wine legacy, and an ode to the simple yet profound pleasure of exceptional wine.
