About La Scolca
Amongst the flourishing vineyards of Italy's Piedmont region, nestled between the cities of Gavi and Novi Ligure, sits the renowned La Scolca winery. Enveloped in an enclave of serenity and natural splendour, it has been a beacon of fine wine production for over a century.
A family-owned enterprise, La Scolca was acquired by the Soldati family in 1919. From an essentially desert abandoned region, the family breathed new life into the arid soils, transforming the vicinity into a fertile vineyard comprising two estates spanning an impressive 50 hectares. The estate enjoys a favourable position, including an excellent aspect and chalky soils that provide an ideal environment for the growth of its celebrated Cortese grapes.
La Scolca's acclaim lies in its pioneering role in the creation of Gavi, a white wine produced exclusively from the Cortese grapes unique to the region. The winery is renowned for its distinctive Gavi dei Gavi—a wine that Trentino native Giorgio Soldati, grandson of the founder, deems equivalent to a Grand Cru. The wine boasts a sophisticated profile, flaunting a fresh and mineral flavour that has made it a global favourite.
La Scolca takes sustainability seriously. Intent on practicing sustainable viticulture, not only to yield high-quality grapes but also to safeguard the delicate balance of the natural environment. They function with a profound respect for nature, marinated with an emphasis on traditional winemaking methods. This combination has led to the winery gaining a sustainable viticulture certificate.
Despite their traditional approach, La Scolca is not adverse to innovation. They were one of the first wineries in Italy to use steel tanks for fermentation and continue to employ advanced winemaking technology to enhance the quality of their products,
La Scolca remains a testament not just to superior wine production, but to the tenacity, vision and stewardship of the Soldati family. Honouring tradition whilst embracing change, this has put them on the map as a winery that skilfully straddles the old and the new.
